Local Liberal Democrat campaigner, Grant Toghill, has criticised the Scottish Government for its management of the NHS as new research reveals that there were 6,196 reports of NHS workers being short staffed in Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

Freedom of information requests submitted by Scottish Liberal Democrats have now revealed:

  • 6,196 reports relating to short staffing were logged locally in the past five years.
  • 3,900 concerns about short staffing were logged by NHS workers in Greater Glasgow & Clyde while Humza Yousaf was Health Secretary

Local Liberal Democrat campaigner, Grant Toghill, said:

“NHS workers are raising the alarm about safe staffing on wards across Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Behind these red flags are patients waiting in pain, wards dangerously understaffed and NHS workers pushed to breaking point.

“People in Renfrewshire will rightly be alarmed by these figures. It shows the toll 16 years of ministerial disinterest has taken on our NHS. What’s even more striking is that it is the health board represented by the current and former First Ministers.

“If only Humza Yousaf had taken proper action on staff retention and workforce planning when he was Health Secretary, perhaps we would not be in this situation.

“Scottish Liberal Democrats have set out positive plans for change. That’s why we are arguing for a burnout prevention strategy to help overworked staff and a health and social care staff assembly to put their experience and expertise at the heart of rebuilding our NHS."
