The Government have again turned their backs on the WASPI women, after a vote this week saw only 10 Labour MPs give their backing to compensation, with none representing Renfrewshire.
This is yet another snub to the more than 331,000 WASPI women in Scotland born in the 1950s who were not properly informed of the rise in the state pension age to bring them into line with men. In December, the Government rejected the recommendation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman to award compensation.
Scottish Liberal Democrat councillor for Paisley Southwest, Anne Hannigan said:
“The Labour party continues to fail WASPI women, while the Liberal Democrats are leading the fight to make the Government see sense and reverse their decision.
“Liberal Democrat representatives like Beatrice Wishart MSP, and MPs Wendy Chamberlain and Susan Murray have been vocal in their support for the WASPI campaigners.”
Grant Toghill, Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for Paisley and Renfrewshire North at the last general election said:
“It was greatly disappointing to see none of Renfrewshire's MPs take part in the debate on Tuesday. It seems that Scottish Labour have chosen to sit on the fence and ignore the calls from the WASPI women.
“For years, Liberal Democrats have pushed both Conservative and Labour governments to fairly compensate WASPI women. The Ombudsman was clear in its recommendations, and we will continue to push for those affected in Renfrewshire and across Scotland to be given the fair redress they deserve."
